Poolenalena Beach Park is a hidden beach between Makena Landing and the Polo Beach. The sand is fine and bright yellow, similar to the other beaches in South Maui. There north side of the beach does not offer off street parking, however, you can always park to the side of the road. You won’t see the beach directly from the road as you need to walk through a little hill after parking your car. See the pictures below for the entrance. If you get to the park from the main entrance, there is a parking lot off of Makena Road.
There was barely anyone on the sand when we visited the Poolenalena Beach so if you are looking for some quiet beach time, this may be a good option. We did not snorkel at this beach, however, there are plenty of lava rocks which is always a good sign and I did see a few snorkels in the water. Facilities are very limited at this park, there are no showers, no restrooms and no picnic tables. You are also on your own in the water, there are no lifeguards either.
Getting to the Poolenalena Beach Park in Maui
The north side of the beach is accessible from the Makena Road only so if you are coming from the Wailea Alanui Road, turn right at Kaukahi Street. At the end of this street, you will see the parking for Polo Beach. Drive past, turn left, follow Makena Road, and you will see the north beach on the side of the road. If you keep driving and get back on the main road (which is still called Makena Road), there will be the main entrance of Poolenalena Beach Park which will lead you to the parking lot.
